Olympic Games
Austrians dominate
ATHENS,
AUG. 28
. Austrians Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher dominated the deciding race in the Tornado class on Saturday to win their second straight Olympic sailing gold medal.
American sailors John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree had to settle for the silver medal after the Austrian crew sped ahead of the fleet, and America's Cup star Paul Cayard of the United States is going home without an Olympic medal.
Lovell and Ogletree came in knowing they'd clinched at least the silver. They trailed the Austrians by three points, meaning they had to sail an excellent race.
They didn't, and the Austrians won the race so easily that both Hagara and Steinacher were jumping into the Saronic Gulf in celebration while most of the other boats were still finishing the last leg.
Hagara and Steinacher won their first gold four years ago at Sydney.
Lovell and Ogletree won the second sailing medal for the United States, which finished two short of its total from Sydney.
Cayard and crew Phil Trinter had a long shot chance at a medal, but were fifth in the Star class after finishing last in the 16-boat fleet on Saturday. AP
