HYDERABAD, AUG. 28. Truck operators on Saturday called off their eight-day-old strike following the Government's assurance of extending the deadline for imposing service tax from September 1. The Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of Hyderabad Goods Transport Association, Nitin Kumar Shah, said the strike had been called off this morning after the Government assured them that the deadline for imposing service tax would be extended by two months. He said that during the two-month time, a nine-member committee would be formed to analyse the problems being faced by transporters and a report would be submitted to the Government. Mr.Shah said that of the nine members, six would be drawn from the transporters association while the remaining three would be from the Government side. "Final decision will be taken after the report is submitted to the Government," he said. The truckers on Friday had come up with conflicting claims over their strike with the AP Lorry owners Association announcing its decision to call it off and the Hyderabad Goods Transport Association maintaining that it was continuing it.
