BANGALORE, AUG. 28. The Consortium of Medical, Engineering, and Dental colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) today cautiously welcomed the agreement reportedly reached between the State Government and "some individual" private engineering colleges on the seat-sharing and fee-structure issues. "We are happy for the colleges which agreed for it. We hold no grudge. If it serves the interests of the students, we welcome it," R.L. Jalappa, COMEDK chairman, told The Hindu . He, however, said their decision could not bind the other members of private colleges' association and COMEDK "more so when such arrangement for differential fee or discretionary quota without regard to the merit is not permissible." A majority of the new engineering colleges and four colleges attached to COMEDK entered into a broad understanding with the Government, it is learnt.
Seats
Mr. Jalappa said most of the new engineering colleges were finding it difficult to fill their seats and the new arrangement would be helpful to them. "But ultimately, it is for the courts to ratify it. How it (the arrangement) suffers legally needs to be watched," he said. However, the uncertainty in medical college admissions continued on Saturday. COMEDK has called for a meeting of all its member institutions to chalk out the future course of action. "We will discuss all issues relating to seat sharing and fees and review all the meetings we had with the State Government," Mr. Jalappa said.
