MYSORE, AUG. 29. A proposal seeking a railway link from Gudalur in the Nilgiris to Mysore via Gundlupet was submitted to the Railway authorities here by the stakeholders in the region. A 40-member team from Nilambur, Gudalur, Gundlupet, and Nanjangud made a case for extending the proposed Nilambur-Gudalur-Nanjangud railway project to Gundlupet in the State and Gudalur in Tamil Nadu as the latter forms a junction for Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. A memorandum submitted to Usha Mathur, Divisional Railway Manager, pointed out that the proposal to link Nilambur-Gudalur-Nanjangud was a long cherished project proposed by the British.
Alternative
The representation said the proposed route could be an alternative to the Konkan Railway route and would reduce the distance from Kanyakumari to New Delhi via Bangalore by at least 450 km and from Thiruvananthapuram to Bangalore by 250 km. The stakeholders said the project would also reduce the pressure on road and help delivery goods quickly. About 40 persons marched from Gudalur to Nanjangud to submit the memorandum.
