KARAIKAL, AUG. 29. Farmers of the Karaikal region in the Union Territory of Pondicherry can benefit more by vegetable cultivation than paddy, according to P. Selvaraj, Dean of the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute (AJANCOARI). Inaugurating a five-day vocational training programme on seed production techniques for amaranthus, annual moringa, bhendi, bitter gourd, snake gourd and pumpkin, organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Karaikal and KVK, Madur, here yesterday, Mr. Selvaraj asked the farmers "to go in for vegetable cultivation instead of paddy if you want to be rich." V. Kandasamy and K.A. Shanmugasundaram, horticulture specialists of the PAJANCORI, Karaikal, emphasised the seed production techniques of amaranthus and annual moringa and pointed out that the farmers could get huge income compared to the income from other field crops. A field visit to the Vegetable Research Station at Palur of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was organised and the trainees had an opportunity to see the `vegetable seed crop' raised in the research station. The time had come to shift from traditional way of vegetable seed production to the recent rends in the vegetable seed production to meet the global challenge, said Ashok Mehta, Professor and Head of the Vegetable Research Station, Palur. At Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pondicherry, K. Ramamoorthy, training associate (horticulture), explained about the tissue culture banana.
