KARUR, AUG. 29. The Inspectorate of Factories has drafted a set of regulations to be observed by the construction industry and forwarded it to the Government for approval. The safety norms would depend on the estimate of the buildings to be constructed and would most likely to cover huge construction activities, the Chief Inspector of Factories, R. Thiruvengadam, has indicated. Addressing the media after inaugurating a workshop on industrial safety got up by the National Safety Council and the Inspectorate of Factories here on Saturday, he said that there had been a quantum jump in the fine realised from factories for violation of the Factories Act and other allied regulations. Errant factories had remitted a fine of Rs. 73 lakhs for violations during 2003-04. The year before, a sum of Rs. 42 lakhs had been realised. Mr. Thiruvengadam said Rs. 7.15 lakhs was realised as fine from the factories for employing child labour in their units during 2003-04, while it was Rs. 4 lakhs the year before. In Karur district, a total of 246 cases of child labour employment were pending disposal as of now. Enforcement of regulations and education on safety aspects among factory workers had helped bring down the number of industrial mishaps from 2,140 in 2002-03 to 1,908 during the last year. Of the last year's mishaps, about 35 had resulted in loss of lives. While a total of 34,101 factories have been registered with the Inspectorate, the tally got increased roughly by about 1,500 every year, he observed.
