Two farmers commit suicide

TUMKUR AUG. 29. Two farmers, one in T. Narsipur and another in Tumkur district, committed suicide. The body of a farmer was found hanging from a tree at Doddamarpanahalli in Tiptur taluk of Tumkur district on Saturday. The Tiptur Rural police have identified the body as that of Panchakshari (36) of the same village. Members of the family of the farmer said he had borrowed a loan of Rs.10,000 from the Primary Land Development Bank, which had recently issued him a notice. It had threatened to auction his house for recovery of the loan. This, they said, had caused distress to Panchakshari. The police suspected that he might have committed suicide. The farmer who committed in T. Narsipur has been identified as Nagaraju. It is said that he ended his life as he was unable to clear the loan he had taken from a cooperative bank. Nagaraju, it is said, had received a notice for non-remittance of the monthly instalment the loan of Rs. 45,000 he had taken. The police said bank officials had also visited Nagaraju's house to remind him of the dues. Following this, he consumed poison and died, the police said.

Villagers protest rape of girl

TUMKUR AUG. 29. Villagers of Jadegondanahalli in the district staged a protest here on Saturday after a girl was allegedly raped. They were later joined by leaders of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti. They demanded that the accused be arrested and the Government pay compensation to the victim's family. The police said that the girl, a pre-university student, was on Tuesday waiting to catch a bus when Mallesh of Kallenahalli, an autorickshaw driver, allegedly took her to Goravanahalli, a temple town, and allegedly raped her. Her father brought her home the next day. The victim who had become weak died on Saturday.

Poojary's `advice' to BJP

MANGALORE AUG. 29. The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, B. Janardhana Poojary, today gave "some advice" to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to take judicial recourse in the Uma Bharati episode. What was the need for a "sanyasin" to arrive with a trainload of supporters to surrender before the court when she could have come alone? She wanted to show the police and the judiciary that she was above the law and they could not dictate terms to her. Her attitude was deplorable, Mr. Poojary said.

`Welcome globalisation'

HUBLI AUG. 29. A robust optimism, abundant self-confidence, and a positive attitude held the key to India's march towards a better future and meet the challenges of globalisation and liberalisation, according to Gururaj Deshpande, who has made a name in the software sector. Delivering the Hurakadli Ajja Memorial Lecture on "Vision India 2020" organised by the Hurakadli Ajja Foundation here on Saturday, Dr. Deshpande said India would have a bright future only if its people worked hard. The country's achievements in information technology, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology had been recognised worldwide. Those who felt that globalisation was detrimental to the Indian economy should learn from China. They should welcome globalisation and strive for greater progress, he said. K. Khaja Peer, Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, inaugurated the lecture series organised by the foundation in collaboration with the university. Subbaiah Shetty, former Minister, Patil Puttappa, journalist, and G.M. Patil of the Loka Shikshana Trust, spoke. V.G. Patil of the foundation welcomed the gathering. A.K. Singh, Registrar of the university, proposed a vote of thanks.

Mobile banking service

Raichur Aug. 29. The Sindhanoor Urban Souharda Cooperative Bank Ltd.(SUCO Bank) has decided to launch mobile banking service at all its branches from September 1.

Manohar Maski, chairman of the bank, said that the SUCO Bank was the first cooperative bank in the Hyderabad Karnataka region to introduce mobile banking service.

Film actress, Anu Prabhakar will inaugurate the mobile banking service at Raichur.

He said that customers, who have registered their mobile numbers with the bank, would get an automated SMS message from the bank after every transaction.

These services had already been introduced at the Koppal branch, the release said.

Project

Bidar Aug. 29. The Bidar branch of the Family Planning Association of India will launch a project for youth "Disseminating Information on Sexual Health for Adolescents" and inaugurate the first youth-friendly health centre on its premises on Monday.

MLA Bandeppa Kashempur will inaugurate the centre.

The vice-president of the FPAI, S.S. Siddaraddi, and the president of the district branch, S.G. Patil will be present.

Experts such as Somnath Patil, Vijaya Patil, and Vijaykumar Kote will participate in a seminar on adolescent health.

CHAMARAJANAGAR AUG. 29. The Karnataka State Women Development Corporation has invited applications from poor women between 18 and 45 years of age for availing themselves of loans under the Udyogini scheme.

An official press release said interested candidates could obtain the application forms personally from the Child Development Officer, Chamarajanagar, by September 6, and submit it along with testimonials by September 20.

Financial aid

CHAMARAJANAGAR AUG. 29. The office of the Kannada and Culture Department here has invited applications from cultural organisations for a financial aid of Rs. 3,125.

A press release from the office said the financial aid would be given to organise literary and cultural programmes, seminars, painting exhibitions, and folk exhibitions.

The organisations should submit the programme list along with the application form by September 15.

Workshop

MYSORE AUG. 29. The Department of Audiology at the All-India Institute of Speech and Hearing here will hold a workshop for hearing aid users on September 3.

A release from the institute said the workshop had been organised to educate hearing aid users about different types of hearing aids and their advantages, use of hearing aids in different situations, trouble shooting, and minor repair of hearing aids.

Information would be provided regarding telecommunication aids for the hearing impaired, the release said.

People interested in participating in the workshop could register their names at the institute, Naimisham Campus, Manasagangotri or on phone 2514449/ 2515410 by September 1.
