MANGALORE, AUG. 29. The special task force set up to counter naxalites in the Kudremukh National Park area has drawn a blank despite two days of combing operations in Bukkadibylu village area in Sringeri taluk of Chikmagalur district, the Inspector-General of Police (Western Range), H.N. Satyanarayana Rao, has said.
Routes blocked
The operation against naxalites would, however, continue, he said. Mr. Rao told The Hindu here on Sunday that the police had blocked all entry and exit routes to the area following exchange of fire with members of People's War in the region on Friday. He said the force had gone to the village based on definite information about the presence of naxalites there, but missed them narrowly. He said Friday's encounter was a close shave for members of the People's War. The thick forest helped the naxalites, believed to be five in number, escape.
Problem
He pointed out that a major problem faced by the force on the trail of naxalites was the presence of leeches in the region. The slush caused by heavy rainfall had helped leeches to thrive. With rains abating in the past few days, the force would go after the naxalites, he said.
Weapons
Asked if the force was equipped to counter the naxalites, Mr. Rao said the force had been given self-loading rifles. He said the range office had also requested the State police headquarters to supply the force with the type of weapons used by the special task force operating in M.M. Hills.
