YSR greets people

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Saturday greeted people of the State on the eve of `Raksha bandhan'.

In a message, he said: `Raksha bandhan' symbolises the affection between brothers and sisters noting that traditionally men give presents to their sisters after getting rakhis tied on their wrists as a token of love.

Dr. Reddy recalled that from the days of glorious past society has been giving the pride of place to women. Festivals such as `Raksha bandhan' further strengthened their status and brotherly ties.

Temple official assumes office

SRISAILAM: G. Krishna Murthy took over as the Executive Officer of Srisailam temple on Sunday. Mr. Murthy, who holds the rank of the Additional Commissioner in the Endowments Department, was posted last night following a swift move on Saturday after the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's visit. Mr. Prasada Reddy, who acted as the Executive Officer, was shifted. Incidentally, Mr. Krishna Murthy worked as the Executive Officer during the previous Krishna Pushkarams in 1992. Meanwhile, the In-charge Collector, Mukesh Kumar Meena, said action was being initiated against two doctors and two revenue officers who were found absent at the places of their posting in the early hours of Sunday.

Women's meet in October

Hyderabad: The All-India Democratic Women's Association will hold its State conference here on October 9 and 10 to analyse the status of women and formulate a plan of action for the coming years. The conference will be preceded by a public meeting on October 8 where the AIDWA president and the general secretary, Subhasini Ali and Brinda Karat respectively, are expected to speak.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Sunday, the reception committee chairperson, Shanta Sinha, said that working conditions and wages, dowry, domestic violence, female foeticide, alcoholism, sexual harassment, legal and institutional frameworks for protecting women's rights and dignity and children's rights would be among the issues to be discussed.

Congress leader flays NDA Hyderabad: The senior Parliamentarian and deputy leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), G. Venkata Swamy, has termed the role of the Opposition NDA in the Lok Sabha `shameful' as it has transgressed all democratic canons.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Venkata Swamy said: "for the first time in the history of Indian Parliament, the Opposition had allowed a budget of more than Rs. 8,50,000 crores of revenue to be passed without discussion. Such an irresponsible attitude was reprehensible and it called for an immediate rethink on part of political parties regarding their role in democracy."

Recalling the `good old days', he wondered why Mr. Vajpayee would not honour the time-tested conventions that were once adhered to by him earlier. The Opposition was reduced to using Parliament as an arena to score political points and hold demonstrations, he said.

RTC staff's plea on panel

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation has suggested to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to set up an independent commission to protect the interests of workers instead of a regulatory commission as purported to have been decided at a review meeting by the Chief Secretary on August 27.

In a representation submitted to Dr. Reddy on Sunday, the federation leaders -- M.S Reddy, president, and R. Lakshmayya, general secretary -- said by appointing an independent commission the Government could correct the wrong decisions taken by the previous regime on issues such as concessions, taxes and illegal operation of private carriers.

Air Deccan reduces fare

TIRUPATI: Air Deccan has further reduced its fare in the Tirupati-Hyderabad sector.

The fare has been brought down to Rs. 1,985 from Rs. 2,647. Addressing newsmen here on Sunday, V. Sivaji Reddy, director of the firm, said that the fare would be reduced further when booked in advance. The airline runs daily flights in the route.

`Mathrubhasha dinotsavam'

TIRUPATI: `Telugu ooregimpu,' a procession from Annamayya circle in the town marked the `Mathrubhasha dinotsavam' on Sunday. After garlanding the statue of Annamayya statue amid group singing of `Maa Telugu thalliki...' the procession started with a resolution to strive for the installation of a statue of Sankarambadi Sundarachari, the writer of the song and a native of Tirupati.

Speaking on the occasion, the TUDA Chairman, B. Karunakar Reddy, expressed concern over the falling patronage to Telugu. Speakers laid emphasis on the need for use of mother tongue in administrative affairs at the official level.

Bombs seized in raids

ANANTAPUR: The police arrested four persons belonging to the TDP and the Congress and seized 26 country-made bombs from their possession in Tadipatri sub-division on Sunday.

The Tadipatri DSP, M. Raviprakash, told newspersons that the Pedda Pappur SI, Siva Reddy, raided the house of Sudhakar Reddy of the Congress at Timmanacheruvu village and seized six bombs from his possession. He was arrested.

At Juturu, the CI, N. Sambasiva Reddy, raided the houses of Ramamohan Reddy, Negeswar Reddy, Pedda Reddy and Narayana Reddy of the TDP and seized 20 bombs from their possession. While three were arrested, Narayana Reddy gave a slip to the police.

Mine dispute leads to clash

ONGOLE: Tension gripped Chimakurthi village where two groups clashed to settle a dispute over payment of mining lease on Sunday. While three persons sustained minor injuries, three vehicles were damaged in the clash. Police rushed to the place and requested the Mandal Revenue Officer to impose prohibitory orders in the area.

BMR Granites obtained lease from the Government to mine on 18 acres. It subleased the mine to Apple Granites on a contract to pay Rs. 5,000 per cubic metre. But a dispute arose between them on the measurement.

As the variation between the two measurements was as high as 100 per cent, it became a major issue between the two parties. They went to court which directed the Apple Granites to pay the due lease amount and continue its mining operations.

As the payment was not made, the BMR Granites mobilised about 100 persons and swarmed the mine to take away equipment. But the workers resisted their attempts leading to a clash.

Modi visits Puttaparthi

ANANTAPUR: The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, visited Puttaparthi on Sunday and had darshan of Sri Satya Saibaba. He left for Bangalore after a two-hour stay in Prashanti Nilayam. District BJP leaders and officials welcomed him.

Film fest concludes

CUDDAPAH: The six-day-long children's film festival, which attracted over 40,000 school students in various towns, came to an end on Sunday.

Nine children's films specially produced to instil confidence, spirit of courage and adventure and patriotism were screened at 51 cinema theatres in the district.

Dies in road mishap

NELLORE: One person died on the spot and seven others were injured when a van in which they were travelling overturned near Kavali Edavalli village of AS Pet mandal on Sunday. The injured were admitted at a corporate hospital here.

AISF appeal

NELLORE: The district unit of All-India Students' Federation (AISF) has demanded stringent action against corporate educational institutions which were found violating Government's guidelines.

In a statement on Sunday, the AISF alleged that these institutions were not even observing stipulated holidays.

Sheds gutted

NELLORE: A vacant poultry farm and thatched sheds were completely gutted in Navlakgarden area on the outskirts of Nellore on Sunday.

Short-circuit was said to be the cause for the mishap.

Collector goes on leave

CUDDAPAH: The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, who has been ailing for sometime, has recovered and has proceeded on a week's leave to Delhi, according to official sources.
