Rare spinal disorder corrected

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, AUG. 29. A rare spinal disorder in a 17-year-old girl was successfully corrected at the Government Rajaji Hospital here recently.

According to GRH sources, Mahadevi of Royappanpatti in Theni district was admitted with acute back pain and deformity (kythosis).

She was admitted to the spine surgery unit of the Department of Orthopaedics, where the doctors detected a congenital dislocation of lumbar vertebra owing to the absence of bone and joints (in the first lumbar vertebra).

A special team, led by Aa. Rajaamani, performed a four-hour surgery on August 14 by adopting the "anterior approach-retroperitoneal-open reduction-internal fixation" method.

"We fixed plates and screws by approaching the spine through the abdomen," Dr. Rajaamani said, adding that the patient would have suffered paralysis on both the legs if the deformity had been allowed to continue.
