`Employment exchanges will be converted into empowerment exchanges'

TIRUCHI, AUG. 29 . Rural youths should shun inhibitions and develop self-confidence to meet and overcome future challenges, the Collector, V. Pandian said.

Delivering his inaugural address at a seminar on employment opportunities for rural youths organised jointly by the District Employment Office and the Rotary Club of Tiruchi here yesterday, Mr. Pandian said the Government had initiated steps for converting employment exchanges into empowerment exchanges.

The Collector said the Study Circle established at the Tiruchi Employment Exchange had proved a boon to the younger generation. Following the success of this Circle, the Government had set up similar Study Circles in all blocks in the district, to enable the youths to update their knowledge.

The unemployment problem was posing a great problem and has caused a lot of disappointment among the youths. The activities of the employment exchanges should provide motivation to the unemployed youths, he observed.

The Project Officer, DRDA, M. Manohara Singh said the Government had taken steps through the employment exchanges to ensure that the benefit of its various programmes reached the really deserving. He suggested that those taking the competitive examinations work with a single-minded devotion. Instead of depending on others, the youngsters for tasting success should be self-motivated.

Mr. Manohara Singh said continuing education centres with library facilities had been set up in every village in the district. However, these libraries were not being utilised well by the youths of these areas, he complained and called upon the local people to take full advantage of the same.

The Regional Deputy Director of the Employment, Radha, said that over 1.73 lakh youths had registered their names with the District Employment Exchange here and were waiting for jobs. The membership strength at the Study Circles functioning in the panchayat unions was not encouraging and urged the rural youths to enrol themselves as members in good number. In this connection she said the Government has allocated Rs.3,000 for the purchase of books etc. for these Study Circles.

The Area Manager of the Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company Limited, Mandar Karnik explained the employment scheme his company has planned for its sales promotion activities.

The Assistant Director of Employment, P. Suresh Kumar, the president of the Rotary Club of Tiruchi, L. Nagappan, and G. Balakrishnan, retired professor of St. Joseph's College, also spoke.
