HYDERABAD, AUG. 29. The Hyderabad Police Commissioner, R.P. Singh, maintained that the police were impartial in controlling crime. Replying to a question at a press conference in connection with the busting of an Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) module on Sunday, he said the police were not concerned with the religion of an accused in a crime. "Whether the criminal is a Hindu, Muslim or Christian our action will be the same -- to arrest and prosecute them," he remarked. He said it was unfortunate that a section of the press had wrongly reported the raids on ISI suspects' houses. Raising the issue of religion with regard to the arrest of an accused was not a desirable trend, he remarked. Referring to the allegations of some Muslim women, who stormed his office building, that Naseeruddin was falsely implicated, Mr. Singh reported that it was a typical pressure tactic adopted by offenders. "By showing placards and raising slogans, they try to get publicity and the attention of people," the Commissioner said. He ruled out the involvement of the eight arrested ISI suspects in the explosions reported in Maharashtra yesterday.
