Upendra Commission begins work

IMPHAL, AUG. 30. The C. Upendra Commission probing the alleged rape and killing of Thangjam Manorama Devi today began in camera an examination of the four accused Assam Rifles personnel as the agitation for the withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from Manipur continued.

Official sources said students destroyed hundreds of textbooks before the Raj Bhavan and tried to enter the premises, leading to the arrest of 50 of them. The students were later let off.

A protest rally on bicycles was also taken out from Keibi Taret Khu to Yumnao Khunou, 20 km away in Imphal East district.

The Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, is to arrive here on September 5 on a two-day visit to hold discussions with representatives of organisations.

The working committee of the 32 organisations spearheading the stir, in a statement, bluntly wanted to know whether the Minister's visit was connected with the withdrawal of the Act. If not it would be better for him to stay away, the committee said.
