Thanjavur
By Our Staff Reporter
THANJAVUR, AUG. 30. The Thanjavur District Railway Users' Association has urged the Southern Railway to operate a separate broad-gauge train between Kumbakonam and Chennai. In a statement here today, the vice-president, A. Giri, said that in its annual timetable revision, the Southern Railway did not extend the long-distance trains in the Thanjavur-Kumbakonam broad gauge section. Moreover, there was no announcement about additional trains for the benefit of commuters. With only one fast passenger train to Tambaram, passengers of Thanjavur and Kumbakonam expected a separate broad-gauge train to Chennai Egmore, he said. The proposed extension of slip coaches of the Rockfort Express up to Kumbakonam, he said, would not benefit the passengers; it would only create problems for Thanjavur passengers, as Kumbakonam passengers would also share the coaches henceforth. Hence, a new train with full complement of coaches should be operated from Kumbakonam to Chennai. The maintenance of coaches could be done at Chennai Egmore, he said. Mr. Giri also demanded that the DEMUs operated between Tiruchi and Thanjavur be extended up to Kumbakonam. The Southern Railway should restore all train services operated prior to the gauge conversion between Kumbakonam and Tiruchi. Without these trains, the railways could not earn revenue, he pointed out.
