KOTTAYAM, AUG. 30. The Union Minister of External Affairs, K Natwar Singh, has underscored the need to cultivate reading habit to enrich life. Speaking on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of DC Books here today, he said that while high literacy rate had kept Kerala in the lead as far as the reading population was considered, many other States, on account of low literacy rate, were lagging behind. Mr. Singh reminded that most of the leaders of the freedom struggle were voracious readers and that they had kept in touch with the writers of the period. The fast pace of life need not be a hindrance to reading, Mr Singh said. Kancha Ilaiah, Dalit ideologue, Jyotirmaya Sharma, Deputy Editor, The Hindu , Sukumar Azhikode, social critic and others spoke. K.M. Mathew, Chief Editor of Malayala Manorama presided over the function.
