TIRUVALLUR, AUG. 30. The Tiruvallur Collector, Kumar Jayant, has warned lorry owners and drivers involved in illegal sand quarrying of criminal prosecution. Though cases had been booked and penalties levied against them, some vehicle owners and drivers were found to be continuing with the illegal quarrying, Mr. Jayant said.
Picketed
A group reportedly picketed a Revenue department official today, when his team detained a lorry and an excavator machine that was being used for illegal quarrying at Periyapalayam. A strike force party rushed to the spot and rescued the team, police said. The Mines Department officials seized 10 vehicles (8 lorries and two tractor-trailers) on charges of transporting illegally quarried sand from Chandirakandigai, Soranchery, Poonamallee, Ayanambakkam, Paruthipattu, Ayapakkam and Arakkambakkam during vehicular checks.
