China to restore historic sites
HONG KONG,
AUG. 31
. China will spend $1 billion on the protection and restoration of the country's major historic sites ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games, a Beijing official said on Tuesday.
Vice Mayor Liu Jingmin said China also plans to reduce pollution in Beijing, while improving the capital's transportation and medical systems as it prepares for the Games, which will be a huge opportunity for China to showcase its economic successes to the world. Liu gave no specifics on the historic sites that will be restored, but told reporters in Hong Kong that China ``highly values'' them.
Liu said Hong Kong investors should find opportunities to cash in on projects related to the Olympics.
Local media reported earlier that the Beijing municipal government is seeking Hong Kong investments of more than $12 billion. AP
