BANGALORE, AUG. 31. While the Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha has condemned the attack on the swamiji of Chittaragi Mahaanthamath at Ilkal in Bagalkot district and others on Monday, the Basava Samiti has come out in support of the choice of the swamiji with regard to his successor. The president of the mahasabha, Bheemanna Khandre, said the group, which indulged in hooliganism in the name of safeguarding the traditions of the math, had sullied the image of the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community. It was unfortunate that such elements were coming in the way of the mahasabha's efforts to organise the community and fight against the injustices meted out to it. The general secretaries of the samiti, B. Virupakshappa and V.G. Navalgund, said the math had an excellent tradition of promoting social justice. Its head, Mahaantha Swamiji, had progressive ideas towards social reforms. "The proposed appointment of Siddharama Sharanaru as his successor is a fine example," they added.
