Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, AUG. 31. The change in the departure time of Shimoga-Bangalore train, from 11 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., with effect from Wednesday has evoked strong protests. D.H. Shankaramurthy, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, said the officials concerned had behaved in a highhanded manner by revising the departure time of the train. He said he had discussed the matter with the railway officials concerned asking them not to effect any change in the departure time of the train. The Shimoga District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has opposed the change in the departure time of the train and said that the new timings would be inconvenient to the passengers from places such as Sagar, Tirthahalli, Sirsi, and Siddapur. The District Youth Congress Committee has threatened to launch an agitation if the railways did not restore the old timings of the train. M. Bharadwaj, Member of the Divisional Railway Users' Committee, who met the General Manager of the Railway's Zonal Office, G.N. Banat, and the Divisional Railway Manager, Usha Mathur, here on Sunday expressed his opposition to the change in the train timing. He stressed the need for the gauge conversion between Shimoga and Talaguppa, renovation of the old railway station and converting the Shimoga-Bangalore morning train into the Inter-City Express. S. Chinnappa, Member of the Divisional Railway Users' Consultative Committee, has opposed the change in the train timing. Meanwhile, it is learnt that the departure time of the train was changed following the change in the departure time of Chennai-Mysore train from Bangalore.
