Uneasy calm in Ilkal

By Our Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR, AUG. 31. Though there was no violence in Ilkal in Bagalkot district on Tuesday, there was an uneasy calm in the town. The town witnessed violence on Monday over a dispute relating to the selection of successor to Vijayamahantha Swamiji of the Chittaragi Samsthana Math having its headquarters at Ilkal.

The Inspector General of Police, North West Range, Belgaum, Harshvardhan, visited the town and reviewed the law and order situation even as police arrested more persons in connection with the violence. Till this afternoon, 156 persons were remanded to judicial custody.

Prohibitory order, which was imposed after the incident, will be in force till Thursday.

Meanwhile, Vijayamahantha Swamiji, who was sent to Gadag after the disturbances, returned to Ilkal with Gadag Tontadarya Swamiji. The swamiji, who held a meeting with devotees and some community leaders, reiterated that he would stick to the earlier stand of naming Siddarama Swami as his successor.

The Tontadarya Swamiji said he would back the swamiji in the issue, and the "peethaarohana" of Siddarama Swami would be held on September 12 as announced.
