BANGALORE, AUG 31. Having already attracted students from India to its institutions of higher learning, Singapore is now wooing students to its schools, especially the international schools. Singapore Education, the exhibition to be held at the Taj Residency here on September 7, is trying to showcase its schools, both public and private, as well as its three universities. The island nation now has 60,000 international students with a good number of them from India.
Both public and private educational institutions in Singapore can admit overseas students. The Ministry of Education there oversees overall academic development and the running of public schools up to the junior college level.
At the tertiary level, Singapore has three universities: National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University. The last is a privately funded university.
The private schools offer several different curricula and courses. International students can choose from the Australian International School, American School and Delhi Public School. At the tertiary level, the private schools offer undergraduate and graduate programmes. These schools also offer diploma and certificate courses. Diploma courses are also available at five polytechnics.
Bilingual policy
At the primary, secondary and junior college levels, there is emphasis on the bilingual policy as well as in mathematics, science and the humanities. At the tertiary level, the choice widens to include areas such as life sciences, logistics, music and multimedia. Prospective students can get additional information from the Singapore Education website: www.singaporeedu.gov.sg.
