KOCHI, AUG. 31. In a bid to extend the scope of tourism promotion activities in the district beyond the city into the rural areas, the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) is planning to open a restaurant-cum-information centre at Kothamangalam. The centre, located in the landscaped Municipal Park lying just outside Kothamangalam town, will be the first one of its kind in the district, according to the District Collector, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, who is also the chairman of the DTPC. The DTPC secretary, M.P. Rajan, said that the centre would include facilities for a restaurant and information centre where the tourists could avail of details such as hotel reservation, travel and accommodation in the district. The location of this information centre would be highly significant since Kothamangalam was considered as the gateway to Munnar, said Mr. Rajan. The centre is conceived as resting and halting place for tourists travelling to and from the high ranges. The construction of the centre with an area of about 1,000 sq. ft. has been completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 15 lakhs. The plot was donated by the Kothamangalam Municipality within the Municipal Park which attracts a good crowd of families, especially in the evenings and weekends. The formal inauguration will be held within a month, said Mr. Rajan. For the time being, there will be one Information Assistant at the centre. The restaurant would function on contract basis. It would have trained staff.
