Award for scientist

HYDERABAD: A scientist of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), G. Parthasarathy, has been selected for the National Mineral Award for 2003 in earth sciences by the Coal and Mines Ministry. The award will be presented at a special function in Delhi.

Dr. Parthasarathy has made significant contribution in the area of experimental mineralogy and mineral physics, according to an NGRI press note.

Water for crop demanded

HYDERABAD: The CPI (M) on Tuesday demanded release of adequate water to all canals of the Nagarjunasagar and Prakasam Barrage to meet crop demands. Koratala Satyanarayana, party's Polit Bureau member, in a statement issued here said despite assurance by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at the all-party meeting on August 25 of releasing water for one crop, not many areas had received water even after a week.

The Government should immediately respond to the situation and release water, he said.

Ryots block traffic on highway

ANANTAPUR: Farmers of 10 villages in Ramagiri mandal went on a flash agitation on Tuesday as the staff of Sree Anantha Grameena Bank branch at Nagasamudram gate closed the bank during lunch hour. Tuesday is the last day for issue of crop loans and payment of premium for crop insurance coverage.

The manager of the branch was absent due to the alleged threatening by some farmers last night. The field officer, who opened the branch and issued a few loans, gave the slip to farmers during the lunch hour and left after closing the bank. Angry farmers staged a `rasta roko' on the NH-7 demanding issue of crop loans.

Farmers storm MRO's office

ANANTAPUR: Farmers from several villages of Kuderu mandal laid a siege to the MRO office on Tuesday demanding impounding of Penna Ahobilam balancing reservoir and filling the tanks connected to its canal system.

Farmers, led by the CPI, went to the MRO office, sent the staff out and locked the office. The protest went on for about five hours. The office was finally opened with the help of the police in the afternoon. The revenue officials and the police assured farmers of taking their problem to the notice of the district administration.

LPG units' merger with HPCL

VISAKHAPATNAM: Two liquefied petroleum gas-bottling plants, now under private managements, will be merged with the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited which has been the custodian of the units. One of the plants is located at Malkapuram. The plant has a filling capacity of 1,400 cylinders a day with 80 employees, according to the INTUC district president, K.S. Mohan Kumar. The other plant is at Raipur.

A meeting on the merger of the Malkapuram plant would be held on September 10 and 11 and for the Raipur plant on September 20, Mr. Mohan Kumar and the deputy general secretary of Bengal Oil and Petroleum Workers Union, Raja Patrudu, told presspersons here on Tuesday.

The Port Employees' Union general secretary, K. Eswara Rao, was also present.

Railway time-table released

HYDERABAD: A `southern region time-table' with train timings, effective from September 1, and other relevant details of services operated by the South, South Central, South Western and Konkan Railways was released on Tuesday by the Chief Operations Manager, South Central Railway, H.G. Sharma.

Mr. Sharma said the time-table of the Indian Railways marked a new phase as it was the first time a region-wise time-table had been compiled. He described it as yet another attempt to improve services.

TTD songs a click away

TIRUPATI: Devotees of Lord Venkateswara across the globe can now listen to the devotional songs and sacred hymns chanted at the Lord Venkateswara temple in Tirumala with a mouse click.

Thanks to the software designed by Carnegie Mellon University of USA, devotees having internet facility need to just log on to `www.tirumala.org' to get hooked to the TTD's audio broadcasting system.

Inaugurating the system at Vaikuntam queue complex on Tuesday, the Executive Officer, Ajeya Kallam, announced that `Live video webcasting' of programmes would be launched in future on the same lines.

Demand for roads to villages

KARIMNAGAR: In a novel protest, villagers of interior Kandlapalli, Rangasagar, Cherlapalli and Kommunur villages of Sarangapur mandal on Tuesday took out a rally in Sarangapur mandal headquarters asking the Government to take up developmental works including laying of roads and construction of bridges.

The villagers, including womenfolk, carrying placards and banners asked the Government to lay roads in the interior villages.

Ex-president of trade

chamber dead

CHENNAI: The former president of the Andhra Chamber of Commerce, L.V. Ramaiah, died here on Monday. He was 84. Ramaiah is survived by four sons and three daughters. Condoling his demise, the Chamber said Ramaiah had been its member since 1954 and associated with its executive committee from July 1970.

Ramaiah, who assumed office as the Chamber president in 1983, was associated with several religious, charitable, social, educational and cultural organisations in Chennai and Andhra Pradesh.

The Chamber, which remained closed on Tuesday as a mark of respect, had honoured him recently for his `sustained membership support,' according to a press release.

Appointed PAC member

NELLORE: The Ongole MP, Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, has been appointed a member of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament.

He is already a member of the Standing Committee of Commerce Department and MPLAD Committee.

Teachers stage

TIRUPATI: Nearly 150 teachers belonging to the Tirupati unit of the A.P. United Teachers' Federation held angry demonstrations in front of the Municipal Office here against the alleged large-scale irregularities, show of nepotism and partisan attitude in the promotion of teachers in the municipality.

CUDDAPAH: The Awaaz and DYFI will observe September 1 as `Anti-Capitalists Day' to resent the onslaught of the capitalists on other nations and attempts to capture the global market through the World Bank, the IMF and the WTO, said the Awaaz convener, S. Magbul Basha, and DYFI leaders, K. Srinivasulu Reddy and B. Manohar, on Tuesday.

Majlis MLA's

effigy burnt

NELLORE: Functionaries of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), burnt an effigy of the Majlis MLA, Akbaruddin Owaisi, near VRC centre, Nellore, on Tuesday, alleging that he was extending support to extremists belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba. They also raised slogans against the State Government for what they described as its `lukewarm' attitude.

Compensation sought for ryots

ADILABAD: The Telugu Desam party (TDP) has demanded compensation at the rate of Rs. 5,000 per acre to farmers under the ayacut of Sadarmat project in Khanapur mandal. They also demanded that the State Government stop forcible collection of power dues from farmers. The Telugu Rythu district general secretary, B. Goverdhan Reddy, and others said thefarmers under Sadarmat ayacut had lost crops as water was not released from the project.

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Town police on Tuesday organised a `peace initiative programme.' The meeting was attended by religious and community elders and other political party leaders.

Arrested

WARANGAL: The Central Crime Station (CCS) personnel have arrested a property offender -- Bommakanti Sravan Kumar -- and recovered gold, silver and two motorcycles, all worth Rs 4.5 lakh from his possession. The CCS Circle Inspector, K. Dakshinamurthy, said the accused was involved in offences since four years and earlier escaped from the police at Karimnagar and Krishna district. He was allegedly involved in 19 cases and stole valuables worth Rs 6.5 lakh so far.

Police recruitment

WARANGAL: Candidates selected for Civil and APSP constable posts have been asked to report at the District Police Office on September 3 along with their original certificates. The Superintendent of Police, Kothakota Srinivasa Reddy, in a statement said, 28 persons were selected as civil constables, two women and 177 as APSP constables. They were asked to appear with original certificates such as SSC/Caste/Sports/Home Guard service and proof of children of policemen.

Boy succumbs to viral fever

WARANGAL: A four-year-old boy - Ahmed -- who was on a visit from Qatar, died of viral fever here today. Ahmed and his mother, Afsar Begum, came to visit his grandparents residing at Yakutpura in Warangal town 20 days ago and was suffering from viral fever.
