Jinabhai Darji dead

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD, AUG. 31. The veteran Congress leader and former Gujarat Pradesh Congress president, Jinabhai Darji, died in Surat this morning after a prolonged illness. He was 85.

Mr. Darji, who became the PCC president in 1972, is well known for propounding along with the then Chief Minister, Madhavsinh Solanki, the Congress votebank theory of "KHAM'' (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, Muslims).

He was also the chairman of Mrs. Gandhi's 20-point programme implementation committee.

Mr. Darji, unhappy with the functioning of the State unit, quit the Congress and joined the Tiwari Congress when the veteran Uttar Pradesh leader, N.D. Tiwari, launched his own party. But he returned to the Congress and helped it make a good show in the State in the Parliamentary elections this year.

The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, her political adviser, Ahmed Patel, and several other leaders condoled Mr. Darji's death.
