Top stars for Hyundai-TNGF Open

CHENNAI, AUG. 31. The four-day Hyundai-TNGF Open, the opening event of the Amby Valley PGAI Tour 2004-05, will commence at the Cosmo-TNGF links from Wednesday.

The total prize fund is Rs. 10 lakhs, with the winner taking home Rs. 1.62 lakhs and the runner-up Rs. 1.12 lakhs.

At a press briefing on Monday, N. Srinivasan, President, TNGF, said, "the course could play tough considering the lack of rain." G.S. Ramesh, Vice-President (HR), Hyundai, said the automobile giant would support the tournament for the next three years.

Thirty-six of the top 40 golfers from last season's PGAI Tour final Order of Merit are taking part. "I was in dream form last year to finish as the top money earner. I'm looking forward to the new season, and the lung-opener is very crucial," said Ashok Kumar. "I'd love to begin with a win, and what better place than at the tough Cosmo-TNGF links," said the 23-year-old.

Mukesh Kumar, who was second in the Order, said that the Cosmo links brings out the best in him. "I have won the Order of Merit four years in succession, but Ashok prevented me from making it five-in-a-row with some really consistent performances. I want to regain the honour," said the Mhow-based golfer.

S.S.P. Chowrasia, Digvijay Singh and Vijay Kumar who finished third, fourth and fifth on the Order, are also keyed up to give their best. Other contenders include former Indian Open champion Feroz Ali, Hero Honda Masters 2002 winner Harmeet Kahlon, Gaurav Ghei, Uttam Singh Mundy, Rafiq Ali and Ali Sher.

A number of talented youngsters led by Asian Games' gold medallist Shiv Kapoor, `Rookie of the year' Gurbaaz Mann, local lad Sandeep Syal, Chandigarh's debutant Harinder Gupta and Rahul Ganapathy are also participating.

The Pro-Am event, sponsored by Color Plus, will be played on Sunday.
