Vidarbha has the upper hand

HYDERABAD, AUG. 31. Vidarbha stole the first day's honours by bowling HCA President's XI out for 132 in the all-India Moin-ud-Dowlah invitation cricket tournament at the Gymkhana Grounds here on Tuesday.

Electing to bat, the home team came cropper against some accurate bowling from medium-pacer Sandeep Singh (three for 29) and off-spinner Preetam Gandhe (four for 49). With the exception of wicket-keeper-batsman Abhinav Kumar (54, 137 balls, 5x4), none of the batsmen showed the application to stay on. The next best contribution came from left-arm spinner and captain Indrasekhar Reddy (27, 4x4, 1x6).

In reply, Vidarbha was sitting pretty at 121 for one off 35 overs, with opener Amit Deshpande (59 batting, 113 balls, 4x4) and Alind Naidu (41 batting, 68 balls, 6x4) at the crease at close of play.

The scores: HCA President's XI 132 (Abhinav Kumar 54, Sandeep Singh three for 29, Preetam Gandhe four for 49) vs Vidarbha 121 for one (Amit Desphande 59 batting, Alind Naidu 41 batting).
