Drainage bursts add to Corporation's woes

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, AUG. 31. Two sewerage bursts occurred on the Bank Road in the city today adding to the woes of Coimbatore Corporation and commuters.

One burst occurred close to the entrance of the Coimbatore Railway Junction and the other just across the road where the sewer line from the Arts College Road join the one on the Bank Road.

The lines on the Bank Road and the Arts College Road have burst often and abuse of sewer lines had been cited as the reason.

Official sources in the Corporation said each worker who went down the sewerage to remove the blocks emerged with a clutch of all forms of municipal solid waste that should never be dumped into drains.

`Replace sewer lines'

Workers said the sewer lines on the Bank Road also needed to be replaced and had been included in the scheme proposed for the Arts College Road. The main line was only of one-foot diametre and rendered inadequate by a huge volume of sewage discharged by a number of commercial establishments and also from the railway junction.

Sources said a scheme for replacing the 30-year-old lines was drawn up in 1997 at an estimate of Rs. 58 lakhs. For various reasons, the implementation was delayed and now the fresh one to be implemented with funds from commercial establishments was estimated at Rs.1.59 crores (after subsequent inclusion of sewers from the Race Course Road). This move was torpedoed by the Opposition in the council recently.

All-party meeting

Sources said that an all-party meeting (of the party leaders in the Corporation Council) would be held this week to brief them on the scheme. The officials aimed at convincing the Opposition parties on the need for total funding by the establishments.

"The problem on the Bank Road also will be solved once the scheme got the council's approval," they said.
