BANGALORE, AUG. 31. A constable, S. Murthy (28), attached to the Sarjapur police station in Bangalore Rural district, was murdered by an armed gang at Ullal Ambedkar Colony in Tavarekere police station limits on Monday. Murthy's assailants smashed his head and limbs with boulders and rods, and he died on the spot, according to the Tavarekere police. A case of murder has been registered on a complaint from Murthy's father, M. Selvaraj. On Monday, Murthy had gone to see a site in the colony along with his friends, Raja and Paramesh. According to Mr. Selvaraj, Paramesh phoned him on Tuesday and said they were accosted by a 15-member gang which picked a quarrel over the site and attacked them. Mr. Selvaraj rushed to the place and found his son's body. The Superintendent of Police, K.V. Ravindranath Tagore, and other senior police officials visited the spot. The police said that five of those accused were identified by the complainant as Nanjunda, Manja, Murugi, Seena and Mahantesh. However, no arrests have been made. The police said Murthy had a two-year-old son.
Racket: Man arrested
The Harohalli police in Kanakapura taluk have arrested the main accused in a racket that led to the recruitment of about 90 teachers who allegedly submitted fake marks cards. Forty-seven candidates joined primary schools and about 40 joined high schools by allegedly submitting fake marks cards supplied by the accused, the police said. The police said the main accused, Basavaraj Rudrapp Bidehal (33) of Hasabi village in Sorab taluk of Shimoga district, was working as first-division assistant in the Government Junior College at Harohalli. Earlier, the police arrested Ayyannagouda and Kashinath for their alleged involvement in the racket.
Three women held
The City Crime Branch (CCB) raided a house in Rajarajeshwarinagar on Monday and arrested three women on charges of immoral trafficking. A telephone and Rs. 600 in cash were seized, the CCB said.
Man dies in accident
Hanumanth (30) of Jalod village in Pavagad taluk of Tumkur district, who was injured when he was knocked down by a motorcycle on 100 Feet Road in Koramangala on Monday at 4 p.m., died at St. John's Hospital. The police said the motorcycle, which was abandoned at the spot, was seized. The motorcyclist was at large, the police said.
Robbery
Two persons robbed Siddarameshwara, a medical representative, of his gold chain valued at Rs. 6,500 and Rs. 50 in cash near Dobhighat in Rajajinagar around 9.30 p.m. on Monday. The police said he was going home after delivering medicines to a doctor when he was robbed.
Murder charge
The Srirampuram police have arrested Kutti (20) of Seshadripuram, who was at large after allegedly murdering Lokesh (24) in Srirampuram on August 13. The police arrested two other accused Umapathi and Prabhakar alias MGR on August 19.
Theft at constable's house
Thieves entered a police constable's house at Vittalnagar in Chamarajpet police station limits on Friday night and took away Rs. 30,000 in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs. 70,000. According to a complaint filed by H.R. Krishnappa, the cash and the ornaments were kept for puja during Varamahalakshmi Vratha, and the theft took place when the constable and his family members were asleep. The Chamarajpet police have registered a case.
