AP to seek legal recourse

BANGALORE Sept. 2. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajashekhar Reddy, has said that the State would seek legal course to get its share of water from the Tungabhadra reservoir at Hospet in Bellary district. The erstwhile Madras Presidency and the Hyderabad State constructed the reservoir in the 1940s and an inter-State Tungabhadra Project Board (TPB) looks after the dam and takes decisions on the release of water from the dam. Mr. Reddy, who was here to invite entrepreneurs to invest in his State, told presspersons that Karnataka had not released more water though it had adequate quantity stored in the dam and in spite of a delegation from Andhra Pradesh visiting Karnataka to press for the water release. Under the circumstances, Andhra Pradesh was left with no choice but to seek legal course. On sharing of excess Krishna waters, he said that he was not keen on a dialogue with the Karnataka Government as it could not serve any purpose.

Farmer commits suicide

CHITRADURGA SEPT. 2. H.R. Thimmappa (50), a farmer, committed suicide at Doddaghatta village in Hosadurga taluk of Chitradurga district on Wednesday. He consumed poison, according to police sources. An arecanut grower, Thimmappa reportedly could not repay the loans he had taken for cultivation. His wife committed suicide for the same reason a month ago, it is learnt.

Convict escapes in Kerala

Kannur (Kerala) Sept. 2. A prisoner undergoing a life term today escaped from police custody while being brought to the Central Jail here from Karnataka. Ravisankar Sharma, 40, sentenced to life imprisonment by a Sessions Court in Kasaragod district, was being escorted to the Kannur Central Jail from Madikeri Central Jail in Karnataka, police said. The convict, after having a meal at a restaurant, escaped while policemen were paying the bill, the police said. Efforts were on to nab him. — UNI

`BJP in awe of Sonia Gandhi'

BANGALORE SEPT. 2. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has said that the national leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party are in awe of the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi's popularity and they launched the "satyagraha" in the State out of desperation. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Dharam Singh said his Government had nothing to do with the case against Ms. Bharti. The matter was between the court and Ms. Bharti. All steps would be taken to maintain law and order in the State, he added. Referring to the "Tiranga Yatra" proposed to be undertaken by Ms. Bharti, Mr. Dharam Singh said: "Let the BJP leaders first hoist the national flag at Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh headquarters in Nagpur."

BJP men to fly to Bangalore

Jaipur Sept. 2. About 150 workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Rajasthan will reach Bangalore to stage a demonstration tomorrow in connection with the detention of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti in the Hubli Idgah Maidan case. The workers include 25 MPs and 60 MLAs. They have left for Delhi by road to fly to Bangalore, according to the General Secretary of the BJP's Rajasthan unit, Arun Chaturvedi. Earlier, the Rajasthan unit of the BJP had booked a special train from Jodhpur to Bangalore to take about 1,000 party workers on August 31, but the booking was cancelled at the last moment on the assumption that Ms. Bharti would be released early. Several BJP leaders from the State were already camping in Bangalore, Mr. Chaturvedi added. — UNI

BJP loses power in panchayat

TUMKUR SEPT. 2. The Bharatiya Janata Party was divested of its control over the Turuvekere Taluk Panchayat today, when its members, Thimmamma and Kumara Swamy, were unseated from the posts of President and Vice-President, respectively, through a no-confidence motion at a special meeting. Seven JD(S) members of the 16-member panchayat, two members of BJP, and a Congress member, who were present at the meeting, voted in favour of the motion. Ms. Thimmamma, Mr. Kumara Swamy and four other members were absent.

VTU announces results

Belgaum Sept. 2. The results of examinations of the first and second semesters of B.E./B.Tech. and one to nine semesters of B.Arch., conducted during July 2004 by the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, have been announced. The results are available on the university website, www.academic.vtu.ac.in. Copies of the results are being sent to engineering colleges. Candidates can apply for revaluation at their institutions before September 15, according to V. Sridhar, Registrar (Evaluation), here today.

Call for protest

HUBLI SEPT. 2. The Karnataka Film Exhibitors' Federation has asked cinemas not to screen films tomorrow to protest against what it termed harassment of film exhibitors wanting to screen new films.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the executive committee of the federation held here today under the chairmanship of Rangangowda Odugowdar, president of the federation.

Mr. Odugowdar said a meeting of the general body would be convened on Sunday to discuss the issue. He noted that exhibitors were the worst hit following the ban on screening non-Kannada films in the State.

Festival

MADIKERI SEPT. 2. "Keil Pold," one of the three important festivals of Kodavas, will be celebrated throughout the district on Friday.

The festival, similar to Ayudha Puja, symbolises the worship of weapons and agricultural implements.

A majority of the Kodavas will celebrate the festival on Friday, though people in other regions have already celebrated it on different dates.

Banned

MANGALORE SEPT. 2. The Deputy Commissioner has banned the movement of all trucks, including LPG tankers, on the Amhai minor bridge between Bantwal and Uppinangady along National Highway No. 48 with immediate effect.

A press release from B.S. Balakrishna, Executive Engineer, National Highways division, said a portion of the bridge collapsed on August 27.

Steps had been taken to construct a new bridge alongside the existing bridge. The Union Government had approved the estimate and tenders had been called, he said. Work was under way to construct a road alongside the bridge.

Handloom expo

UDUPI SEPT. 2. An exhibition-cum-sale of handloom products will be held at the Town Hall here by the Union Handloom and Textiles Ministry and the Department of Handloom and Textiles from September 6 to 12.

The Assistant Director of the Department of Handloom and Textiles, Srinivas Murthy, said the exhibition was being organised as part of Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations.

The exhibition would be inaugurated by the President of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, U. Vanajakshi. K. Raghupati Bhat, MLA, would preside over the function. The President of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Nityananda Shetty, and the Chairman of the Zilla Panchayat Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industry, Gladys Almeida, would be the chief guests, Mr. Murthy said.

MANGALORE SEPT. 2. The Department of Youth Affairs and Sports has invited applications from men between 18 and 30 years of age for maintenance of athletic track and volleyball courts in Mangala Stadium here.

The work involves marking the track and handling sports equipment. Interested candidates may send their applications to the department at the earliest. Details can be had from B.C. Umesh, athletics coach.

MANGALORE SEPT. 2. The first meeting of the Alumni Association of University College, Mangalore, for 2004-05 will be held at Dr. K. Shivaram Karanth Meeting Hall of the college on Sunday at 10.30 a.m.

Released

MANGALORE SEPT. 2. A sum of Rs. 10,000 each has been sanctioned for the treatment of Akshata (4), daughter of Venkappa Naik, and Govinda Nayak, a resident of Yerumbu in Alike village, from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, according to a press release from K. Padmanabha Kottari, MLA.

Illicit liquor seized

CHITRADURGA SEPT. 2. Excise officials of Chitradurga district on Monday seized a vehicle transporting illegal arrack on National Highway 4.

According to sources, the officials seized 2,600 arrack sachets in 15 plastic bags and arrested two persons, Aslam Sab and R.P. Srinivasa Reddy, who were transporting it.

Interrogations revealed the presence of an illegal arrack-manufacturing unit at Sadarahalli of Chitradurga taluk. The police have seized one single head sachet-making machine, 450 litres of adulterated arrack in 15 cans and other machinery used for the manufacture of spurious arrack.

A case has been registered against Vijay Kumar Jain and B.M. Prasanna Kumar in this connection, the sources have said.

Nidhi Adalat

HYDERABAD Sept. 2. The Employees Provident Fund Organisation will organise Bhavishya Nidhi Adalat on September 10 at the Sub-Regional Office, Gulbarga, for on-the-spot mitigation of grievances of the members of the Employees Provident Funds schemes, 1952.

The Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner, Sub-Regional Office, Gulbarga, N.B. Adurkar, in a statement on Thursday said members who had grievances could send their petitions to the Gulbarga office in the prescribed format available in the Public Relations office of the office. The adalat would be held between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Regional Office, First Floor, Madina Complex, Main Road, Gulbarga.

Protest

CHITRADURGA SEPT. 2. Various Arya Vysya organisations staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday expressing anguish over the overnight damage caused to a circle, which was named after the deity Vasavi.

The protestors suspected the hand of anti-social elements in the incident. They urged the district administration to book the culprits and to reconstruct the circle.

M.A. Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner, who heard the representatives of the organisations, promised them that action would be taken against the guilty and ordered for a probe. He ordered reconstruction of the damaged structure.

Speaking to The Hindu, G.B. Chebbi, Superintendent of Police, said the police personnel on duty noticed a lorry speeding away near the circle. It might have caused the damage. As it was dark, the policy personnel on duty were not able to take down the number of the vehicle, he said. ``There is no need to panic. It is not a deliberate act at all,'' he added.

Elected

CHITRADURGA SEPT. 2. S.R. Lakshmikantha Reddy was re-elected president of the Merchants Souharda Sahakara Bank Niyamitha, Chitradurga, here on Wednesday. H.S. Shyam was elected vice-president of the bank, according to a press release.

Bid to rob bank

BIJAPUR SEPT. 2. A gang of persons made an unsuccessful attempt to commit theft in the Mamadapur branch of Vijaya Bank in the early hours of Thursday.

The police said the thieves entered the bank by breaking open the main door. They tried to cut open the treasury with gas-welding equipment. However, the safety siren attached to treasury went off waking up the residents nearby. Soon the thieves took to their heels. The Bijapur Rural Police have registered a case on a complaint by the branch manager, Pramod Srinivas Puranik.

Arrested

Bijapur Sept. 2. The Bijapur district crime branch police have arrested Bhagwant Malkari Kattimani, a youth from Halasangi village in Indi taluk on the charge of deceiving unemployed youths.

The police said Kattimani used to pose as an influential person having contacts with high officials and politicians and collected large sums of money from youths promising them that he would help them get government jobs. He reportedly cheated dozens of youths in the last two years.

Art of Living course

MYSORE Sept. 2. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's Vyakti Vikas Kendra is organising a basic course in Art of Living at JSS Women's College, University Swimming Pool Road, Saraswathipuram, Mysore, from September 7.

Scholarship

MYSORE Sept. 2 . Aravind Balajee, an old student of the Chinmaya School and Demonstration School in Mysore, has achieved a distinction at the National Law School of India University (NLSUI), Bangalore.

He has been awarded a Harvard University scholarship and financial assistance for the LLM course at Harvard Law School, Massachusetts, U.S.

Aravind Balajee has bagged the A.V. Gopalakrishna Bhat Gold Medal for second rank and Dutt Lal Jhunjunwala Gold Medal in International Law at the convocation of NLSUI held on August 29.

DC's plea

Chamarajanagar Sept. 2. The Deputy Commissioner and president of the Child Labour Practice Elimination Action Plan Committee, Harsh Gupta, has urged the officials to implement the plan in a proper way.

Speaking at a meeting here recently, he instructed the officials to take steps to admit 50 more students to the rehabilitation school in the district. Taluk and gram panchayats should organise workshops to create awareness on child labour among their members, he said.
