LUCKNOW, SEPT. 2. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, today met Governor T.V. Rajeswar in the backdrop of his reported reservations over granting approval to the controversial Urdu University ordinance with the provision to appoint a State Minister as its Pro-chancellor for life. Though there was no official word on the deliberations between Mr. Yadav and Mr. Rajeswar, sources close to the Chief Minister said that the Urdu University ordinance did figure in their discussions. The relations between the two came under strain after the Governor raised objections to the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Urdu University Bill proposing state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan as its Pro-chancellor for life. The government withdrew the Bill on the last day of the recently concluded Assembly session triggering a controversy of sorts suggesting that the Yadav government was pushed on the backfoot on the issue. The government, however, put a step forward on the matter by issuing an ordinance later without making any changes in the text of the Bill and sent it to the Governor for assent. The ordinance failed to get immediate nod of the Raj Bhavan prompting Mr. Yadav to allege a conspiracy behind the delay. The issue also marked a new low in the relations between the Samajwadi Party and Congress with the former alleging the hand of AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, behind the Governor's stand. PTI
