Bilkis case: accused not produced in court

MUMBAI, SEPT. 2. The trial in the Bilkis Yakub Rasool gang-rape-cum-massacre case was deferred to September 15 as the accused were not produced in court on the first day of hearing.

The Judge, U.D. Salvi, appointed by the Bombay High Court to conduct the trial, took charge of the papers concerning the case today.

The trial, which was shifted to Maharashtra from Gujarat, is being conducted in a court at Mazagaon here.

Reason not cited

All the 20 accused, placed in judicial custody by a Gujarat court, are lodged in the central jail here. However, the Mumbai trial court was not informed about the reason for their absence today.

The accused include two Deputy Superintendents of Police, four other policemen, a doctor couple, Arun Prasad and Sangita, and two BJP men from Dahod district.
