THE HAGUE: Moving to end repeated trial delays, the U.N. war crimes tribunal imposed two defence lawyers on Slobodan Milosevic, whose doctors say his heart condition could become life threatening if he continues to represent himself. The three judges on Thursday named British attorneys Steven Kay and Gillian Higgins, until now court observers ensuring fair proceedings, as defence counsel. They will take over the case from September 7, when Milosevic's first witnesses are due to be called. The former Yugoslav President protested the decision to assign him lawyers and said he will appeal. Judges and prosecutors agreed Milosevic could still name a lawyer of his choice his legal research is being handled by three assistants from Belgrade and that he could remain involved in his defence.
