It's for Sonia to decide: Amarinder

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 2. The Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, said today any decision on whether or not he would continue in office was up to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and he would follow the high command's order.

"It is entirely the decision of Congress president to remove me or not. I am a committed Congressman and whatever she decides would be acceptable," Capt. Singh told reporters in response to a question whether it was his turn to go after the party decided to remove A.K. Antony from the post in Kerala.

Capt. Singh met the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, who is also incharge of party affairs in the State, and the Home Minister, Shivraj Patil. He said he discussed the issue of the coming Assembly byelections with Mr. Mukherjee.

The central leadership had asked the State Congress to prepare a set of names for the by-polls to the constituencies of Garhshankar in Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala. The Pradesh Congress Committee chief, H.S. Hanspal, and he would shortly submit a list to the high command. Mr. Mukherjee was likely to visit Punjab next week, he added.
