Channels restrained from showing adult movies

MUMBAI, SEPT.2. The Bombay High Court yesterday restrained nine satellite TV channels from beaming adult movies or programmes without the prior permission of the Central Board of Film Certification.

The Chief Justice, D.S. Bhandari, and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud restrained the respondents, including Star TV, Sony TV, Zee TV, Udaya TV, AXN TV, Surya TV, from showing such programmes and also asked them to file affidavits stating how many adult movies were shown during last three months and at what time.

The Bench also asked the city police chief to file an affidavit stating what steps he had taken to control obscene material printed in newspapers and film posters.

The order came on a public interest litigation petition (PIL) filed by a teacher of St. Xavier College, Pratibha Naitthani, who contended that once a film had been rated `A' by the CBFC, it cannot be shown on TV.

Her counsel, M.M. Vashi, pointed out that films like Kamasutra and Bandit Queen were being shown on various TV channels. He also said that programmes with explicit contents like Wild On, Sex and the City were being aired without any permission from CBFC.

He said that such songs and trailers were affecting the psyche of children having an adverse effect on them. Mr. Vashi contended that in spite of several complaints about the same, the Commissioner of Police had taken no action.
