Headmistress' son arrested for torturing tribal students

Koraput, Orissa, Sept. 2. The son of a headmistress has been arrested by the police for torturing five tribal school students below 10 years at Borrigumma old primary residential school run by the state primary education department.

The school children were allegedly lashed by a hot ladle as they failed to answer some questions posed by the headmistress' son, who was appointed by his mother to teach them violating the official norms.

According to reports, about 40 tribal students of the primary school with boarding facilities, were housed inside its premises. The district administration had asked the school authority to make arrangements for teaching poor tribal students inside the school.

But the headmistress, in clear violation of rules and regulation, allowed her son to teach the students. The young man reportedly lashed the students with a hot object on August 25 when some of the students failed to answer his questions correctly.

Due to the severity of punishment, a student Laki Nayak became unconscious and was hospitalised for treatment of burn injures while four other students -- Kurshan Amanatya, Tutu Behara, Naryan Amanatya, Ganesh Amanatya -- suffered minor burn injuries

The matter was suppressed till the visit of state minister Rabi Narayan Nanda on Monday to the village. Some local people reported the matter to the minister and sought his immediate action. Following a direction from the minister the local police arrested the son of the headmistress and sent him to judicial custody.

Jeypore sub divisional police officer (SDPO) D Jena said the arrest was made on the basis of complaint lodged by the parents of the students.
