THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 2. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has welcomed the foreign trade policy announced on Tuesday by the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Kamal Nath. In a statement here today, Mr. Chandy said the State was especially happy about the announcement that Aroor in Alappuzha district would be made a `special economic zone' for seafood industry and Kannur, a `town of excellence' for handloom industry. He said the proposed biotechnology park in Kochi would benefit immensely by the decision under the new Foreign Trade Policy to treat biotechnology units as export-oriented units. "The Visesh Krishi Upaj Yojana, introduced to boost exports of fruits, vegetables and flowers and their value-added products will bring prosperity to the rural regions. The decision to allow duty-free import of capital goods and to permit such capital goods to be installed anywhere in the agro-export zones will also help the farm sector in a big way," he said.
