Congress high command to choose UDF convener

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 2 . The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, said here today that the Congress high command would also choose a new convener for the UDF.

Mr. Chandy, who left for New Delhi, told mediapersons that he was confident of sorting out all issues relating to the Cabinet formation.

Meets Karunakaran

He expressed satisfaction over his discussions with the veteran leader, K. Karunakaran. "I called on him to seek his advice relating to the formation of the Cabinet," Mr. Chandy said.

Mr. Karunakaran appeared to be in high spirits after Mr. Chandy's visit.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mr. Karunakaran said he had discussed all relevant issues with Mr. Chandy, but did not believe all problems would vanish. There would be problems, but these should be overcome through united action, he added.

Mr. Chandy also called on the former Finance Minister, K. Sankaranarayanan, and held discussions on the formation of his Ministry.

Meanwhile, the CWC member, Ramesh Chennithala, and Mr. Joseph Vazhakkan, called on Mr. Karunakaran in the morning. According to sources, they discussed the current political situation in the party and the UDF.

Mr. Chennithala's visit assumes significance in the context of Mr. Ommen Chandy's assumption of office as Chief Minister and the rather weak position the Karunakaran faction finds itself in after the Lok Sabha elections.
