A case for `softer' Line of Control

By Our Staff Reporter

SHAHPUR (POONCH), SEPT. 3. The importance of a softer Line of Control (LoC) was again underscored in this remote forward village in Poonch district, which runs along the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). A girl from Bandi Chaichiyan area of the PoK, who recently wanted to seek solace at a Sufi shrine on this side of the LoC, landed in jail.

The tale of Rangili Bi (18) belonging to the Gujjar tribe is a classic case of the problems faced by the people living on both sides of the LoC. Ms. Rangili Bi said she was grazing cattle in her village when one of the cattle fell off from a cliff and died.

As she was scolded by her in-laws, she was in deep distress and entered the shrine for seeking mental peace.

The troops of the 8 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles asked her to show her identity card. As she did not have any, the soldiers handed her over to the district police who registered an FIR.

Ms. Rangili Bi has been sentenced to judicial custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Poonch for six months and fined Rs. 500.
