HYDERABAD, SEPT. 3. The Minor Irrigation Minister, A. Chandrasekhar, on Friday announced that all panchayat raj tanks would be brought under Minor Irrigation Department, in a phased manner, in three to four years, beginning with those falling under chain of tanks system.
500 cr. for repairs
Addressing a press conference after a review of the Minor Irrigation and Lift Irrigation Departments, the Minister said in the first phase, tanks in Anantapur, Mahbubnagar, Ranga Reddy, Adilabad and Cuddapah would be brought under the Minor Irrigation Department. He said the Central Government had earmarked Rs. 500 crores for funding repair and restoration of water bodies in the chain of tanks system and released Rs. 200 crores. The State would utilise these funds. At present there were 12,000 Minor Irrigation tanks covering 27 lakh acres and 72,000 tanks under Panchayat Raj Department covering 15 lakh acres. He said a decision had also been taken to repair the 915 breached tanks at a cost of Rs. 150 crores bringing 1.50 lakh acres of additional area into cultivation. Old tanks would also be repaired, taking up one in each village and district wise plans prepared. Dr. Chandrasekhar said water management would be taken up in a scientific manner, making Command Area Development Agency (CADA) and Water and Land Management Training and Research Institute (WALAMTARI) active. Posts of Commissioner and Director would be created in CADA.
