Sagar water for different regions

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 3. Bowing to representations from different quarters, the Government on Friday announced three important decisions for frugally utilising the available waters in Nagarjunasagar benefiting both coastal Andhra and Telangana.

After a meeting with elected representatives from these regions, the Major Irrigation Minister, P. Lakshmaiah, announced that 4 tmcft water would be released to Nagarjunasagar left canal for saving standing crops over an extent of 90,000 acres in Zone II of the project lying in Khammam district. Of this, 20,000 acres was wet and the rest irrigated dry crops.

For ensuring the benefit to targeted fields and avoiding illegal tapping by others for fresh sowing, officials from Irrigation, Police and Revenue departments would patrol the canal round the clock under a committee formed with the RDO, DSP and Irrigation engineer concerned. Water was already released for the Zone I on August 24 benefiting Naglonda district.

The Minister told reporters that a similar patrolling was being undertaken for the right bank canal also under which the tail-end lands failed to get water so far. The discharge towards Guntur from Prakasam Barrage would be increased to overcome similar problem.

Mr. Lakshmaiah said they had finalised six packages to complete all the distributaries under Madhava Reddy Canal in Nalgonda district in three years and ensure assured irrigation to 2.7 lakh acres.
