Gujarat panel to review riots-related cases
By Our Special Correspondent
GANDHINAGAR,
SEPT. 3.
In compliance with the Supreme Court order, the Gujarat Government has set up a 14-member committee headed by the Director-General of Police, A.K. Bhargava, to review and, if necessary, reopen the 2,000 or so communal riots-related cases closed by the police.
An official notification issued by the Home Department, which referred to the committee as a special cell, authorised Mr. Bhargava to name the members in the committee. It would include two Additional Directors-General of Police, including a Muslim officer, S.S. Khandwawala, and seven Inspectors-General of Police. Four DIGs have also been co-opted as members to review the cases.
A Government spokesman said that each member would be allowed to take the assistance of three police inspectors, including one from the minority community for reviewing and preparing reports of police records of the cases concerned. Each case report should be submitted to the DGP for posting on the Internet and reporting back to the Supreme Court.
Anyone with the knowledge of fresh facts relating to a case can contact the DGP after studying the case status on the Internet for further review.
