Friday prayers by and large peaceful

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, SEPT. 3. Barring stray incidents of stone-throwing and irate mobs damaging a motorcycle and a car, the Friday prayers passed off peacefully in Old City.

The police made tight security arrangements for the prayers amid reports that some groups, which were against the recent arrest of eight persons on the charge of being LeT agents, might create trouble.

Soon after completion of prayers at the Mecca Masjid, a group of youth went towards the Charminar bus terminal and resorted to stone-throwing, chanting slogans. Though eyewitnesses said a passer-by sustained head injury in the incident, police officials did not confirm it. Youngsters going towards Bhavaninagar broke the windscreen of a car and damaged the motorcycle parked on the Moghalpura-Hari Bowli road.

Lathicharge

Police had to resort to mild lathicharge at some places in Bhanvaninagar to disperse youth hurling stones.

The Additional Commissioner of Police (Co-ordination), A.K. Khan, who offered prayers at the Mecca Masjid, personally supervised the security arrangements.

MP appeals for calm

The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader and MP, Asaduddin Owaisi, was also present in the Charminar area before and after the prayers. He was seen persuading people offering prayers to observe restraint and disperse peacefully.

The South Zone DCP, Harish Kumar Guptha, rushed to the Moghalpura area on receipt of information about stone-throwing and brought the situation under control.

The Charminar ACP, Shaik Shariffuddin, thanked the media, especially videographers and cameramen, for cooperating with the police by not moving closer to people coming out of the Mecca Masjid.
