Five Excise staff suspended

Raichur Sept. 4. The Government has suspended five Excise officials from the district, including Vishvaroop, Deputy Commissioner of Excise, for their involvement in the alleged irregularities in the collection of excise duty. R.B. Aghvane, Commissioner of Excise, issued an order on August 27 suspending the Deputy Commissioner of Excise and Mangani, Excise Superintendent, and Monappa, Siddramappa and Zaffar-ul-Hussain, inspectors. He also ordered an inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the department.

Qualifies for national seminar

GULBARGA Sept. 4. K.V. Ramya of Nirmala Girls' High School in Sagar taluk of Shimoga district has qualified for the national-level science seminar to be held at BITM in Kolkatta on October 4. A press release issued here today by the District Science Officer, Sajoo Bhaskaran, said Ramya bagged the first prize at the State-level science seminar held at the Sainik School in Bijapur on Thursday. Soujanya M. Rai of St. Joseph's High School, Madikeri, and N. Pamela of MCC High School at Shahabad in Gulbarga district won the second and third prizes, respectively. Teams from 31 educational districts participated in the State-level seminar. A panel of judges selected the best presentations. An invitation to participate in the national-level seminar was given to Ramya at the valedictory function.

Two die in road accident

Raichur Sept. 4. Two persons died on the spot and 14 were injured when a tipper and a NEKRTC bus collided near Ramnath Camp in Manvi taluk on Friday. The police said 16 persons were travelling in the tipper to Manvi from Raichur. Eshappa Kodli, driver, lost control over the tipper, which collided with the bus. The police gave the names of the dead as Ramanayak (35) of Mittimalkapur village and Shivaraj (45) of Arshinagi village. The injured were admitted to hospitals in Raichur and Manvi, the police said.

Bodies found

DAVANGERE SEPT. 4. The bodies of twin babies were found in a garbage pit on RMC Road here on Saturday. A woman noticed the bodies when she went to dump garbage in the pit. A large number of people gathered near the pit after the news spread. A case has been registered.

Woman killed in road accident

TUMKUR SEPT. 4. Muniyamma (55) died on the spot when a car ran over her at Thippur Gate near Yediyuru in Tumkur district on Saturday. The police said Muniyamma and her son-in-law, Mudlagiriyappa, were returning home after visiting the Siddalingeswara Swamy Temple when the accident occurred on Bangalore-Mangalore highway. The car driver sped away after the accident, they added. In another accident, Kemparaj (35) of Guddada Katte village died when a motorcyclist knocked him down at Chelur on Saturday. The police said Kemparaju was returning home from a rice mill when the accident occurred.
