Thanjavur

THANJAVUR, SEPT. 4. Diethyl Carbamazine Citrate tablets were distributed to 20 lakh people in Thanjavur district today. The Minister for Environment and Forest, R. Vaithiyalingam, launched the campaign, to curb filariasis, by consuming the tablets at the New Inspection Bungalow. The Deputy Director of Health, A. Ganesan, gave him three tablets. The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, distributed the tablets at the health centre at Manambuchavadi in Thanajvur. Later, he distributed the tablets at Pandaravadai. The Papanasam MLA, M. Ramkumar, also took part in the campaign. Dr. Radhakrishnan said 60 lakh tablets were available for distribution. A total of 9,065 employees were drafted for distribution.
Tiruvarur
The Collector, P. Ekambaram, launched the campaign at Pulivalam near Tiruvarur. Of the population of 12,14,925, 11,56,117 would be given the tablets.
Nagapattinam
The Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, inaugurated the distribution of the pills at the government hospital at Nagapattinam. He said the district's entire population of 15 lakh would be given the tablets through 8,000 staff members of the Health Department, members of self-help groups, noon-meal centre employees and volunteers of social service organisations. He said the taluk and health officials would monitor the distribution.
Perambalur
The tablets were distributed to an estimated 26.50 lakh people in Perambalur and Pudukottai districts. The Perambalur Collector, D. Vivekanandan, inaugurated the campaign at Thuraimangalam. He told presspersons that 4,863 volunteers of service organisations, village health nurses and members of self-help groups distributed the tablets. The distribution would continue for a couple of days. Those developing symptoms of fever after consuming the tablets are likely to be afflicted with the disease. Arrangements have been made at all government hospitals for treatment of such patients. The Deputy Director of Health, R. Balasubramanian, said this first phase of the campaign covered 4.32 lakh people, and in the second phase, blocks in and around Ariyalur were brought under the campaign, and the tablets distributed to 10.52 lakh people. The district accounted for 695 filariasis patients. A majority of 60 persons were in Keezhapuliyur in Veppanthattai block, he said.
Pudukottai
At Pudukottai, the Minister for Fisheries, M. Radhakrishnan, inaugurated the campaign. He said 6,000 volunteers of non-governmental organisations distributed the tablets. The Joint Director of Health, Chennai, Muhammad Yusuf, was present.
