NELLORE, SEPT.4. After a marathon discussion over the prevailing drinking water shortage in Nellore district, the General Body meeting of the Zilla Parishad, held here on Saturday, have decided to meet the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Monday, to press for release of atleast 25 tmcft of Krishna water from Srisailam project to Somasila reservoir. Initiating the discussion, the Rapur M.L.A, Anam Ramnarayana Reddy, expressed concern over the drying up of bores and wells, besides acute shortage of drinking water. He appealed to all the political parties to rise to the occasion and meet the challenge. He urged the House to pass a unanimous resolution seeking atleast 25 tmcft of Krishna water. Towards this end, he suggested that an all-party delegation should meet the Chief Minister.
Action plan
Mr. Reddy said that the Zilla Parishad has grossly failed in tackling the situation and demanded an action plan to tackle the situation. Other M.L.As, including A. Prabhakara Reddy, M. Parvatamma, M. Sekhar Reddy and P. Srinivasulu Reddy, also expressed concern over the decline in water table. Another issue which dominated the proceedings was the declaration of only 34 mandals in the district as drought hit. The members unanimously demanded that all the 46 mandals of the district should be declared as drought hit. They were also critical about the `Velugu' programme and complained that the elected representatives were not being involved in the programmes. The Minister for Primary Education, N. Rajyalakshmi, the ZP Chairperson, P. Chenchal Babu, and others were present.
