Be sportive about this report card

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, SEPT. 4. "Encourage your child; you have a champion at home" says the sports report card, which looks like a regular school report card. But nothing about physics and civics here, only athletics.

On page one, the details of the student have to be filled up, including age, height and weight. Inside are the norms for students; for instance, if a boy runs 50 metres in less than eight seconds he is given 10 marks, nine for a time between 8.1 and 8.4 seconds and zero for a time of 11.7 seconds and above.

The student will be tested on four other parameters such as endurance, strength, explosive power and agility. The student will also be ranked among the rest. "And the parent will also take note if a child's fitness is low, say, if he's the 35th in a class of 35 children," points out Mr. Davidar, member-secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.

All these tests should be conducted in two days, and in the event of non-availability of physical education teachers, class teachers may conduct the tests.

The consolidated format on the performance of each child, who has scored 10 out of 10 or more than 8 or 9 should be sent to the Chief Education Officer of the district and the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu head office.

The District Sports Officer will select the best among these children for a district-level coaching camps where they will be further assessed.
