TIRUCHI, SEPT. 5. Students were cautioned against distractions from their studies caused by the television at a function organised by the Rockcity Welfare Association, a voluntary organisation, here on Friday. The function was organised to distribute books, under the aegis of the association's book bank project, to 1,300 economically poor students belonging to 10 colleges in and around the city. Under the project, which has been in place since 1998, candidates who have been selected in a year will continue to enjoy the benefits till completion of their course. Distributing books and cash prizes to students who had excelled academically, the Corporation Commissioner, Harmandar Singh, deplored that reading habit among students was coming down. Since the performance of boys was going down vis-a-vis the girls because of various distractions, he exhorted the boys to compete with girls in the right spirit. S. Sekar, academic advisor, Chidambaram Pillai College for Women, said reading was essential to develop communication skills, which was vital for career progression. Ashok Gandhi, project chairman of the association, spoke. L.N. Lechumanan, former district governor, Lions International, spoke. The J.L. Johri Memorial Rolling Cup for the Best Performing College under the Book Bank Project was awarded to Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College. Shenbagavally, vice-principal of the college, received the cup.
