CHENNAI, SEPT. 5. It requires some effort to wade through the pedestrian and vehicular traffic in this underbelly of Chennai. Old Washermenpet residents have become used to it by now, just like the other things they have to put up with. The water shortage, which has hit the city, is acutely felt in the area. Residents have to contend with speeding buses and other vehicles plying on Tiruvottriyur High Road to get their pots filled from Metrowater tankers. The stretch of this arterial road between Pandiyan and Maharani Theatre bus stops has been the scene of near perpetual digging, for one reason after the other. As a shopkeeper sarcastically puts it, "It has been like this for the past two months. First they said it was the storm water drains. They dug and then filled it up. Next came the sewage lines. They dug and filled it up again. Now they have dug again for Metrowater lines." The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board's Chennai City River Conservation Project Package Three is now being executed by Ramky Infrastructures Limited. The project is to expand the capacity of the pumping main interceptor system at Kasimedu North Wall Road of Tondiarpet's A, B and E, pumping stations. The traffic congestion, lack of proper garbage collection and a sloth in execution of civic works makes residents of the area feel they (as many other pockets in north Madras) are given a raw deal by the civic body.
