Pilgrims throng Velankanni

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGAPATTINAM, SEPT. 5. With just three days left for the conclusion of the 11-day annual feast festival of Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health at Velankanni, about 10 km from here, thousands of pilgrims have started flocking to the shore town to witness the big and beautifully-illuminated chariot procession of the shrine on Wednesday night.

Hundreds of devotees are coming on `padayatra' every day to Velankanni. The feast is celebrated on September 8, birth of Our Blessed Mother, and is preceded by a novena, which began on August 29 evening with the hoisting of the flag. During novena, masses are offered in many languages.

M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, Nagapattinam Collector, told The Hindu today that elaborate security arrangements had been made for the festival.

Drinking water and sanitary arrangements were made from Nagapattinam to Velankanni.
