This Day That Age
Delegates to the eight-nation SEATO conference, at the opening session in Manila on September 6, affirmed their countries' determination to repel aggression in the area. President Ramon Magsaysay of the Philippines, inaugurating the conference, designed to set up a collective alliance against any aggression in South-East Asia and the Western Pacific, urged the delegates of the eight nations, including Britain and the U.S., to declare their readiness to check aggression by every means, even "armed force." Flags of the eight participating nations, the U.S., Britain, Australia, New Zealand, France, Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines, flanked the conference hall. Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Mr. Mohammed Zafrullah Khan, was among the first to arrive. After the delegates had taken their seats around a horseshoe table, the U.S. Secretary of State, Mr. Dulles, proposed that the Philippines Vice-President and Foreign Secretary, M. Carlos Garcia, be the permanent Conference President and this was agreed to unanimously.
